Listed below is some general information relating to demerit points in SA
"If you commit a traffic offence against the Road Traffic Act 1961 or the Australian Road Rules 1999, you may incur demerit points against your driver's licence", The number of points incurred depends on the offence and how likely it is to cause a crash.
Points are recorded against your license for three years from the date they appear. If you accumulate twelve or more points, you will have a lose of license.
If you accumulate upto 15 points, your license is suspended for three months.
If you accumulate between 16 & 20 points, your license is suspended for four months.
If you accumulate over 20 points, your license is suspended for five months.
Demerit points are incurred whether the offence is committed in South Australia or interstate.
If you gain six or more points, you will receive a notice unless you live interstate. This noice will contain information about the offence
If you disqualified from driving due to demerit points, your disqualification will start 28 days after you receive a formal notice.
Information about this will be provided on the disqualification notice, You must make a formal application to accept a 12 month good behaviour option at the time of acknowledging receipt of your disqualification notice.
If approved, you will be allowed to drive under the condition you do not accrue more than 2 demerit points for 12 months otherwise you will be disqualified for twice the original disqualification period.
