Mixing Colors

Provide white paper, red, yellow, and blue tempera paints, a small paintbrush, paper towels or rags, and a small cup of water for cleaning the brushes.

Show your child some basics about how to change colors, like how to clean a brush in the water and wipe it on the paper towel. Give your child time to explore with the paints and ask if she is getting any colors that she didn't have to begin with.

According to how she responds, ask more specific questions like, "How did you make orange?" or "Where did the green come from?"

About this App

The animated series PEEP and the Big Wide World gives wings to the innovative idea of teaching science to preschoolers. Wry and distinctive visual humor, charming plotlines, and lovable characters combine with a comprehensive science curriculum to attract and engage kids three to five years old.

Paint Splat offers kids the opportunity to experiment with mixing colors or match the color Chirp holds up on a card. If the color orange, purple or green (which make up the secondary color group) is successfully created, Chirp offers some of the harder-to-mix tertiary colors. Like many of our games, this one gets harder only if the player is succeeding.

How to Play Paint Splat

By tapping on the tubes, players can make Quack squirt up to two blobs of blue, yellow, and red paint onto a fence. Tapping on the hose washes the paint off, enabling kids to have a fresh start.

Kids can experiment with mixing whatever colors they like or they can try to match the color Chirp holds up.
